How to hire the right talents?

In today’s “War for Talent” every company should have an interest to not only find and hire the right people but also to keep them on board. Pfeffer (1998) brings it to the point: “Hiring the right people is crucial.” However, there is no point in attracting, hiring and on-boarding the right talents, when they leave shortly after. You also want to retain them.

When we are recruiting to fill a certain role we tend to only focus on a candidate’s knowledge, skills and abilities. This is the classical approach that has been used for ages. (Markman & Baron, 2003)

Science however has found that an effective recruitment should particularly pay attention to a person-organisational fit. This means a particular congruence in values, goals, attitudes and a person’s preferences. People are mostly attracted to work environments and companies that align with their personal values. (Cable & Judge, 1996)

So how do we best figure out who are the right talents to hire and retain?

Simply by assessing a person’s inner values and preferences. By assessing a person’s motivations. By assessing which work environment a person prefers.

Hogan’s Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) assessment “describes personality from the inside – the core goals, values, drivers, and interests that determine what we desire and strive to attain. By assessing values, you can understand what motivates candidates to succeed, and in what type of position, job, and environment they will be the most productive. ”
